FAREWELL PRAYER SERVICE FOR CLASS 10TH STUDENTS

                                                Prayer service

 Song – Unche Unche Parvet.

Jesus says you are the light of the world.  Light symbolizes God and it dispels darkness. As we begin our prayer service let us invite God in our midst. Now I invite Rev. Sr. Rose the Manager, Rev. Sr. Joyce our Principal, Mrs.Anita, (Neelam) the head girl and the head boy to light the Lamp. We will now surrender our students into the loving hands of God our loving father and ask his choicest blessings upon them.

 (Song)

Dear friends as we have gathered here our hearts are filled with gratitude to God for all the blessings that He has bestowed on us yet our hearts are intermingled with gladness and sadness and these feelings that are so intense as we bid farewell to each of us.

Dear friends we all of us have seen a variety of cups. A cup is a container which holds something. Whatever it holds has to be eventually emptied out into it. Our journey is like that a constant process of empting and filling, of giving and receiving, of accepting and letting go. Ravindranath Tagore says “a numberless meetings and partings are there in this world

As we journey in this world. ” With gratitude in our hearts we come before you dear Lord because marvelous ways you have worked wonders in the lives of these young ones. You have showered upon them your choicest graces   during the past 12 years.

God is the giver of every gift; we are only recipients of God’s many gifts given to us so that we may be channels of His love and life to each other. A sincere act of gratitude springs from a deep rooted faith and reliance on God. It is a gracious gratitude a sign of maturity that indicates a positive outlook in one’s life. Each time we show gratitude we grow as persons because it enriches our life. When an attitude of gratitude takes root in us it evokes praise and becomes the basics for acceptance and love leading to happiness and inner freedom.

(Song – You are precious to me)

(Story) The Eagle

It is said that an eagle has an incredible life span of 70 years but in order to reach 70 years it must make a hard decision to die or to live .In its 40’s its long flexible talon can no longer grab prey to consume. Its long sharp beak becomes bent with .Its wings get heavy and make flying a labor rather than an effortless task of its youthful years .The eagle decides to harness its inner energy and so undergoes a painful process that spans 150 years .It flies to its nest and the first thing it does is to rip its beak off and allow a new one to grow. It then pulls out its talons or nails. After they have grown it begins to pluck out all its feathers. All of this is a long torturous process that takes 5 long months. After this eagle glides smoothly across the blue skies celebrating its new lease of life. We too like the eagle are confronted with choices but unlike the eagle ours is not a once and for all choice but a daily choice.

( Song – Lord I come to you.)

Dear friends in the Holy Bible it is said that everything that happens at the time God chooses. Everything has its time for everything there is a season and a time for every matter under heaven. So dear students, we have come to celebrate our togetherness as a class. Today as you look back on the years you have spent within the walls of this school, surely you feel a deep nostalgia for the bygone days. When you first entered the school, you were so tiny and it was really difficult for you to part from your dear parents. Very soon you came to love the school and all its inmates. You became a part and parcel of this great family. The same difficulty arises when you think of leaving the school. The bonds of love cannot be broken, yet you cannot always be at school. The time has come for you to step out into the world and be a light to those groping in darkness. You are going out with a resolution to make a difference wherever you will be. Live up to the values placed before you and always be royal and grateful to your St. Francis School.

Dear students many blessings you have been receiving from God through many persons like parents, teachers. Let us offer our prayers for them.

1.Lord, we pray a special blessing on this school. Bless all the children who spend their time in this school. Give them a desire to learn and grow. Bless their hard work and give them success.

  1. We are grateful, Lord, for our Principals who have directed our lives during the past 12 years. We pray in a very special way for Sr. Joyce our Principal, who has had so much to do with us during this last year of our school life. We are grateful to her selfless toil and for all the helps she provided for our physical, mental, emotional and spiritual growth.
  2. Thank you, Lord, for all the teachers who have come into our lives so forcefully. Those who moulded us and formed us in our Junior Classes and those who gave us a taste for knowledge and a desire to grow into beautiful persons. Bless in a special way the teachers who have toiled hard these last few years preparing us for our Board Exams. You be their reward.
  3. We pray for the Librarian, the Clerks, and all who work to keep our school neat and clean the gardener, the many security personnel, and our domestic staff who help us in many ways. Bless them, Lord, abundantly.
  4. We pray for each one of us, about to step out into the wider world. We are grateful to our St. Francis School. We have grown under her shadow and are proud to be called her children. Be with us on our journey of life and help us to be an inspiration to our co – travelers.

Let us now surrender all these prayers into the loving hands of our heavenly Father as we pray together – Our Father.

I now invite Rev. Sr. ..... to come forward and bless all the students as we extend our hands, asking God to bless them.

Circle them, Lord.
Keep protection near
And danger afar.

Circle them, Lord
Keep hope within.
Keep doubt without.

Circle them, Lord.
Keep light near
And darkness afar.

Circle them, Lord.
Keep peace within.
Keep evil out. Amen.

(Song) – There shall be showers of blessings.

Dear students I invite you to call to mind the values you have learnt and the values you want to live. (Pause)as you move out in line with your candles, light the candle  and write down one value which you are going to practice as you move out from this Institution.

(Students will write the values on the papers)

 (We are pearls)

BRIEF AND LONG INTRODUCTION FOR FIRST AND FINAL PROFESSION

Brief Introduction

On this grace filled morning with immense joy we the members of the CFMSS family have gathered in the presence of God tossing the praises of the Almighty and to share in the joy of our sisters as two of our novices make their first commitment to the Lord and seven of our junior sisters offer themselves unreservedly for life to the Lord and His people. On this joyful occasion with great joy and gratitude on behalf of St Francis province of the Clarist Franciscan Missionaries of the Most Blessed Sacrament, I welcome each one of you to this Solemn Eucharistic celebration. On this day of blessing we are fortunate and blessed with the benevolent presence of our beloved Arch Bishop Anil J. T. Couto who willingly and gladly accepted our invitation to grace this occasion and preside over the celebrations. Your Grace, I extend you our heartiest welcome. We are delighted to have you, Rev. Fathers, brothers, sisters, and the beloved parents and family members of our sisters on this auspicious occasion. Your presence has enhanced our joy manifold. We are glad to welcome the parishioners of All Saints Church whose presence is always encouraging. We warmly welcome each one of you who are present here to this thanksgiving Eucharistic celebration.

Now let us all stand and welcome our dear second year novices and the Tertian sisters  escorted by their respective mistresses, parents, members of the Provincial team, the concelebrants and the chief celebrant, as they proceed  to the altar of love  with the accompaniment of melodious music and the rhythmic steps of our little ones.

PROCESSION TO THE ALTAR/ ENTRANCE DANCE &HYMN

Introduction

“How good and kind you are O Jesus! How sweet and gentle your appeal! How powerful your charm! Make me all yours.” It was the ardent desire and constant prayer of our beloved foundress Venerable Mother Seraphina. With the same heartfelt longing our dear sisters ........................... and our second year novices ............................. are here today to dedicate their life to the Eucharistic Jesus. They desire to belong to no one but Him alone, to love Him as their first cause, even more than themselves.

This is a day of exuberant joy and gladness, to all of us as especially for us CFMSS our dear sisters have accepted the invitation of the Lord to follow Him wholeheartedly by surrendering themselves, pouring out their whole self, without counting the cost, to the one who gave Himself totally for their sake, to be with Him and do His will always. It is a propitious moment, moment filled with sentiments of gratitude to and love for God as our sisters are determined to walk the path of Christ, a path less trodden.

Yes, Dear sisters, you are precious gifts for the CFMSS family, for the church and the world. You are indeed privileged to make this offering of yourself to God in this Year of Consecrated life. On this heavenly day, we are enveloped by gratitude and filled with pleasure as you begin anew your journey with God your beloved with renewed fervor and fresh enthusiasm and joy unlimited. As our beloved Foundress desired, “may Jesus be honey in your mouth, music to your ears, and delight to your heart” and the Virgin Mother be your teacher, and guardian angel your invisible companion in this journey.

As our sisters have taken this courageous step and are about to pronounce the vows to God in the presence of the whole Church, let us storm the heavens with our prayers so that the Lord may sustain these young brides of Christ in their commitment and grant them the grace of fidelity and perseverance in their vocation.

PARA-LITURGICAL SERVICE FOR NEWLY ELECTED PROVINCIAL TEAM

Para liturgy for the Newly elected Provincial and Team

Dear sisters we are gathered in the name of our God with joy in our hearts as we are here to pray for our newly elected Provincial and the Team.

Lord Jesus, our Master, today we are in your presence, with joy and gratitude for the wonders that you do in our life. You make all things new. You are the Master of our life and you know what is best for us, and you have a plan for us and it is a project of your love. And all that happens is according to your purpose and plan and you do it for our good. We believe in your purpose for us and trust in your providence and love. Even before we ever think of you, you thought of us and adds abundance of blessings into our life. Even before ever a word is on our lips you know it and everything under heaven happens according to your designs and plans. Everything in the universe remains connected to you as you remain united to everything and everyone, and so we are connected to each other.

Today as we gather in your presence we are filled with joy and praise and thank you for the amazing gift of our dearest Sr. ............ the newly elected Provincial, whom you have chosen to be the leader of our Province for the next quadrennium. There is no authority except from God, and those authorities that exist have been instituted by God. God chooses whom he finds fit and qualifies the one he has chosen. Therefore, He has chosen a magnificent person of   our dear Sr Joyce,  with the depth of heart, wealth of mind, strength of character, and rootedness in prayer for the purpose as he has found her worthy.

We also thank you lord for choosing our dear sisters, Sr. ………….., ………………., ……………..,and  …………….. to be with her as Councillors and work as a team. We thank you for the dedication, willingness  and their acceptance  to be at the service of the Province. We thank God dear sisters for each of you, the persons that you are and the gifts and graces that you are blessed with to serve the Mission. The lord says: “I will instruct you and teach you the way you should go; I will counsel you with my eye upon you”. Trusting in his words may you gain the strength and grace to move ahead  fulfilling the mission the Lord had prepared for you.

Offering

A green plant needs fertile soil, water, sunlight, and air if it has to grow and bear fruit. And a plant cannot grow healthy if any of these components are missing. The plant needs soil, to be rooted, and to stand firm, and to absorb the nutrients required. Without the water, the plant will not be able to transfer the nutrients and other materials from one part of the plant to the other. The  sunlight is required by the plants to perform the process of photosynthesis and prepare the food which gets stored in the form of fruits. For this process it needs carbon di oxide which does not support life, and releases oxygen which is  life giving.

Now we invite you dear sisters to come forward and offer these symbols-Plant and seeds, fertile soil, water, sunlight, and air which represents your willingness to work together as a team and your commitment to the service that the Lord has chosen you.

I request Rev.Sr. ...... the newly elected Provincial to hold the plants and the seeds in a tray, as          the first Counselor , Sr.. ……….  place the fertile soil around the plant, And the second counselor, Sr. …………. pour the water into the soil and the 3rd counselor, Sr. ,………….  places the air near the plant and the 4th Counsellor  Sr………..  place the sunlight behind the plant.  Now I request Rev. Sr. Joyce  to offer the symbols before the Lord.

Yes, my dear sisters, everything in nature is related and are connected to one another in one way or the other and so too is our life. Dear sisters, each of your presence and contribution is essential for the plant of our province to bear fruit in abundance.  We pray that you form a healthy plant, with strong roots, receiving enough water and nutrients, illuminated by the light of our Lord and bear the fruit that will give life to many and nourish the members of our province and strengthen everyone who comes to it. May your unity and love, care and understanding, the witness of your life absorb all the harmful elements and release the life giving breath to all, especially the emotionally marginalized, who face challenges, who long for liberation of mind and heart…..so that we may be a group of consecrated persons where our differences are celebrated and diversity becomes the means for unity.

Song: Prabhu………teri rahon pe chalna mene sweekar kiya hai.

Scripture passage by the Provincial: Lk. 4: 16-21

Prayer by the Provincial and the Team: I invite our dear sisters to pray in the words of King Solomon as he prayed for the Wisdom

Prayer of Solomon  Wis.9:1-11  :       Prayer for Wisdom

God of our ancestors and Lord of mercy, who have made all things by your word, and by your wisdom have formed humankind to have dominion over the creatures you have made, and rule the world in holiness and righteousness, and pronounce judgment in uprightness of soul, give me the wisdom that sits by your throne, for even one who is perfect among human beings will be regarded as nothing without the wisdom that comes from you. You have chosen me to be leader over your people. With you is wisdom, she who knows your works and was present when you made the world; she understands what is pleasing in your sight and what is right according to your commandments. Send her forth from the holy heavens, and from the throne of your glory send her, that she may labour at my side, and that I may learn what is pleasing to you. For, she knows and understands all things and she will guide me wisely in all my actions and guard me with your glory.

Song: You are the salt of the earth.

Dear Sisters, We pray that you use all your gifts, talents and intelligence that God has bestowed on you to faithfully weigh the courses of actions and make decisions. May you always seek the greater good and the well being of others. May your hearts be always radiant with the love of God, may your minds  and spirits be exhilarated by the message of the glad tidings of the Lord. May his compassion, wisdom and right decisions be yours. May you be possessed and guided by the Holy Spirit. May he make you strong and courageous for the road ahead, give you ability beyond what you feel able, may his gifts freely flow through you.

May He give you the discernment to understand His will, to hear his voice, and to know his ways. May he give you a spirit of hope to work together for good, a spirit of cooperation to move beyond lines drawn by particular interest, for life, and pursuit of happiness knowing that our security comes from relationships of trust and communication.

May God ignite in you the fire of wisdom and understanding, insight and counsel, compassion and courage. May you speak with the voice of the voiceless. May you be strong to confront injustice. May you not be alone, but find support in your struggle, and sisters to rejoice with you. May your vision be fulfilled, in company with us; may you have brothers and sisters on your journey. Now, missioned by Jesus, gifted with the Spirit, called forth by the congregation, particularly the St. Francis province, may you stand firm in your commitment.

Dear Sisters as you go along the journey, may our Blessed Mother, intercede for you may our Seraphic father St. Francis,  our Mother St. Clare and our beloved Foundress Mother Seraphina be at your side to strengthen you, guide you, and we pray that May we have the strength of character to support you to respect you and your commitment to serve us. May we have the patience to give you a chance to govern with grace, compassion, justice and love.

Praying Psalm …. For the Newly elected provincial and Team: Now let all stand and pray the Psalm No….. altogether praying for the newly elected provincial Team.

Dear Sisters, it was the ever strengthening, unconditional love of the Father, that gave the courage to Jesus to go to the extend of dying on the cross in obedience to Him. It was the mighty outpouring of the Holy Spirit, that gave the courage to the Apostles to profess bravely their faith in Jesus and establish the Kingdom of God on earth . It was Jesus who promised us that He will be with us to the end of the age. Therefore, let us invoke the Blessings of the Trinitarian God to come upon our dear sisters.

Now I request our Most Rev. Mother General Mother ......and the General Councillors Sr. ..... and Sr. ........ to place your hands on the head of our Newly elected provincial and Team one by one and pray for God’ Spirit to come upon them as we all extend our hands towards them and implore the blessings of the Holy Trinity as we sing the song.

Celebrate your blessings….

Glorify your creator.

Yes dear sisters,

It’s time to celebrate the joys of today, the memories of yesterday and the hopes of tomorrow.

It’s a time to celebrate all the hard work and prayers that led to this joyful occasion.

Dear sr……….., …………….., ……………, ……………., …………….

May your life be filled with countless blessings as you begin the new journey together as a team.

With joy and jubilation let us greet our dear sisters with music and dance. As our young sisters dance for joy, the newly elected Provincial team will be led to the Prayer hall. Let us accompany them in happiness and love, wishing them congratulations and prayerful wishes.

Prayer Meeting for the Incoming Provincial Team of the 16th Provincial Chapter.. 16 Dec 2021.

On this day of Joy, let us praise and thank the omnipotent, omnipresent and ever-loving God with the words of our foundress Venerable Mother Seraphina."A purely joyous thing, it is to be united to the Church, in praising God with His own Praises''.

On 15th Night a conference was called immediately by God, the father. St. Peter was appointed as chief organizer. Jesus was cool and confused why His daddy called for a meeting.

Holy Spirit just arrived after an outing for a year as he was in Mission to collect the bio-data of the members of the St. Francis Province. Even though he was tired, God the father told him to present the report after refreshing himself.

So meeting began, Holy Spirit presented the report and announced the five names who will be eligible to be voted for a particular and secret mission which will be announced later.

Then God the Father addressed the assembly and surprised all with an announcement of election as He was hearing daily from many virgins the prayer for the success of the provincial chapter.

Jesus was perplexed and asked his father, Dad what are you doing?

God gently silenced His Son with His look, Beta, calm down. Your Mission is over. Let me sent now my daughter sr. Matilda and asked St. Peter, to hand over the keys of authority to sr… Matilda.

All rejoiced because it was purely the plan of God with lot of preparation and consultation with our Patron Saints Father Francis, Mother Clare and Mother Seraphina.

Yes dear sisters it was truly the plan of God as God Has chosen Sr. Matilda to animate our Province. As someone rightly said whenever God has something in mind He raises new leaders who can shoulder the responsibilities.

It is not an accident; it is not by chance Dear Sister. You are being given a special power and special grace to be a leader who will stand out, walk along with the sisters and keep alive the legacy of our foundress.

So Dear Sister we thank God for you whole heartedly as He has chosen you to be a leader, Mother and Sister while animating our beloved St. Francis Province.

We read in Bible that Time to Time God’s love is been revealed through the rising of a new leaders. Some brought revolution in the lives of human beings.

Likewise  Dear sisters………………………………………………………………………………………, today You are a mouth piece of God and prophetess to our times who has been  given a special grace to radiate the love and Mercy of God to all.

May the Lord be with you dear Sisters

As you are unique, You are a mystery too.

God loves you immensely and so He shares with you His mission

May you always enjoy the loving presence of Holy Trinity

The intercession of Mother Mary

The Accompaniment of Patron Saints

The Blessings of mother Seraphina

Above all full the support and cooperation of your dear sisters.

As you take up this new responsibility today all that God whispers to you is that, “My beloved Daughter, My grace is sufficient for you”.

Dear sisters let us thank God for our new provincial team So, let us join together to sing the joyful praises of God and make it a memorable day.

Song……

Dear Sisters, The Lord says I am with you and will follow you where ever you go. Before I formed you in the womb I knew you through and through .I chose you to be mine, before you left your Mother’s side I called you , my friend , to be a sign  and as the caretakers in the form of Provincial Superior and councilors  of St.Francis’ s Province, to be consecrated  women of Joy, peace and reconciliation in communities and Mission.  He assures you dear sisters that anywhere and everywhere you go His hand will follow you and He will not leave you alone. He will make you strong and He will fill you with His Holy Word and with His strength, to build and destroy, create and over throw, reap the harvest that he sows and His Word you will carry in all your endeavors.

Your answer will be.. Here I am, Lord I will go Lord wherever you lead me.

Flowers are the wealth of the plant

Fruits are the wealth of the tree

Birds are the wealth of the sky

Animals are the wealth of the forest

Vegetations are the wealth of the land

And you dear sisters are wealth of our congregation especially our Province.

We thank God for the precious gift of each of you dear sisters and your willingness to shoulder the responsibility of animating our beloved Province.

We wish to surrender each of you in the loving hands of God symbolically.

Now I invite Rev. sr. Ivy  to hand over this bowl of soil to Sr Matilda.

Soil  .  (PROVINCIAL)

Soil is the symbol of productivity and creation. Soil gives life, renews the nature, replace the old with new and brings newness. Dear Sister you are created to recreate the earth to renew its life and rearrange the created things. At this juncture you are given a mandate to create challenge and cooperate and direct CFMSS today to reinvigorate the province to march as consecrated women of joy peace and reconciliation in the communities and Mission.

Dear sister. Matilda

As you are chosen to be our Provincial superior to animate our Province. May God guide you to rekindle the sacred flame of love and give you the grace to safeguard the mandate of our beloved mother Seraphina and embody you with courage, compassion and a higher vision for our Province.

Lord, today we implore your blessings upon our dear sister, be her support and guide, joy and solace, comfort and counselor. Walk with her, down through the valley and over the plain

Down in the shadow and in the sunshine

Down in her strength and strife

Down in her joys and sorrows

Down in her todays and tomorrows. Be with her all through her life’s uneven journey that she may find joy and fulfillment in serving you THANK YOU LORD!

2. MANURE (Vice Provincial)

The one who plants and the one who waters work together with the same purpose and both will be rewarded for their own hard work.( 1Cor 3:8). Now I call sr……………. to offer the manure.

Manure is a valuable source of nutrients for crop of every kind and improves soil’s productivity. It enables the plant to grow strong, withstand adversities and bear fruit in abundance. God has chosen you dear sister…. As our vice- Provincial together with our Provincial Superior to improve the productivity of the soil.

May God grant you His grace to collaborate with His plan for our Province.  May you continue to be available and willing to give meaning to the meaningless, voice to the voiceless, strength to the weak and inspiration to the lifeless. Thus you become a powerful agent of building up the kingdom of God.

3. SEED (SECOND COUNCILOR)

God’s daily care is with us .He promises you dear Sr. …… that He is your salvation, your inspiration, your refuge, .He will calm the tempest that which is going to become part of your life. He will turn your rainy days into sunny days. He will be your guide, comforter and teacher. Now I call upon Sr…. to place this seed before the Lord

Seed.  This seed is so small but it is full of life. It has the capacity to produce 50 to 100 folds of fruit. But it can produce the fruit only if it is ready to undergo pain of losing its shape .Lord I bring this seed as the symbol of the dedicated life of our sister….. Like this seed she has immense capacity to love and serve you, and may all her gifts and talents help in reshaping and renewing   the consecrated women of Joy, peace and reconciliation in communities and Mission.

4. PLANT (Third COUNCILOR)

Psalmist is inviting us to go up the mountain of the Lord with serenity and truth, along with a heart that is spiritually poor so that we may be able to be the messenger of the kingdom on this earth. Yes dear sister ….  today the Lord is asking you to be that person who can wipe the tears and pain of others and be the light of those who are growing weak and those whose steps are slow and those whose hopes are bleak, and be a friend of those whose eyes grow dim and cannot see and cannot walk though the end is near..

Now I request Sr…… to place this plant before the Lord

Plant.

This plant tells us that the Lord has a special message   for you dear Sister .And it  speaks of 8 aspects of our life namely living, giving, sharing, loving, bearing, working, receiving and praying.

Dear Lord we pray that as she offers this plant, may she be reminded    of her   role as a councillor, and be   rooted in your love  to stand steadily and draw strength from your font of living water. As the plant always draws the sap upwards. Let all her thoughts, words and deeds be upward towards you fulfilling your plan.

5. FRUIT ( Fouth Councilor)

Almighty and powerful God, we low down before your powerful presence. Today in a very special way we praise and thank you for choosing Sr….. as a provincial councilor as you had selected your apostles to continue your mission we beg your choicest blessing upon your hand maid Sr….. as your instrument to work for the good of our province and above all for your honor and glory.

Now I ask Sr….. to come forward and take this fruits  and offer to God.

Fruit is the produce of the land and the hard work and patient waiting of the farmer.. it is nutritious to the body and delight to the human heart. Dear sister as you offer these fruits, we pray that may God supply you with all the graces to cope with the challenges this responsibility brings with it and render a joyful service to God, his people and to your sisters. May His Spirit be a constant guide to bear fruit in hundredfold.

Offering our dear sisters in the loving hands of God, thanking for the gift of each of them let us sing the magnificat. ( aatma meri)

LET US PRAY

My Lord and my God Jesus, you who made your triumphal entry into Jerusalem on the back of an ass, deign to use them today as that ass which carries you into the lime light of today’s modern world.

Deign O Lord to use them today as a loud speaker that gives wings to your word and teachings for the benefit of those living around me.

Deign O Lord to turn them today into a flowerbed that exudes your divine fragrance alone for every passerby to breathe in.

Deign o Lord to use them today as a mirror that reflects your compassionate face and divine personality to everyone who look upon them

Deign O Lord to turn them today into a tree producing fruits of your Holy Spirit to nourish those who come to sit and rest in their shade.

Lastly, my Lord and my God, deign to use them today as a broom, but a broom held in your holy hands your powerful hands, your hands that shower forth graces and blessings alone, in order to sweep clean all the nooks and corners of our today’s world according to your Holy will as consecrated women of Joy, hope, peace and reconciliation in our communities and Mission. We make this prayer through Christ our Lord.

I request dear sr. matilda our newly elected provincial superior to bless us with the blessings of St. Francis.

27 th to 01st JANUARY 2022

27 DECEMBER 2021 – 01 JANUARY 2022: HOLY MASS REFLECTIONS

27 DECEMBER 2021: 1 JOHN 1. 1-4; JOHN 20. 1-8, ST JOHN THE APOSTLE

Focus: True Love is so contagious that it touches and transforms all and whole. If only everyone tries to be a little more affected by this positive contagion, people will become more sane and healthy

1.      The celebration of Christmas is a celebration of love. During this Christmas octave, we continue to be under its powerful spell. Joy is dancing around vibrating in the whole atmosphere. This love continues to surround us as we celebrate the feast of John, the beloved disciple. This is a dominant and significant qualification that is given to him. He is “the apostle of love”. And he is one who draws our focus on God as Love.

2.      It is a love that is rooted in a very deep personal intimacy with the Lord. This is very evident in John’s words in his first letter in the first reading: “We have seen with our eyes, we have heard, we have looked upon and touched with our hands. Consequently, there is also a mission that is to proclaim to others the same Lord and word of life, and testify to it.

3.      There is also a clear purpose: so that others too may have fellowship with us because we ourselves have fellowship with the Father and with His Son Jesus Christ. And that our joy may be complete.

4.      Thus, the picture is complete: there is an intensely passionate love for the Lord. This manifests in inseparable intimacy. This personal communion leads to a committed mission of bearing witness to him in word, both proclaimed and written, and life example.

5.      In fact, this should be so for every believer and follower of the Lord. Love the Lord and be loved by him. This feeling, experience, and relationship of loving the Lord and being loved by him foster the most profound warmth, confidence, vibrancy, joy, and commitment, leading to a life of love and witness. This is what is seen in St John.

Direction: We need not do extraordinary things for God. Just love Him and love passionately and it will do the rest.

28 DECEMBER 2021: 1 JOHN 1.5 – 2.2; MATTHEW 2. 13-18, HOLY INNOCENTS

Focus: True love dies for the sake of the loved one. It is better to die for love rather than live in hatred

1.      On 28th December we commemorate the death of the holy innocents. It looks strange that soon after the greatest birthday at Christmas we celebrate a series of deaths, of St Stephen on 26th and today on 28th, the holy innocents, on 29th, St Thomas Becket and on 30th, St Anysia. Their death in fact is a birth to heaven. God came down from heaven so that we can go to heaven. He shared in our human life so that we can share in his eternal life. He became like us in our human misery so that we become like him in his divine glory. Every martyrdom for the sake of Christ is a new birth, a rebirth into heaven.

2.      The children below two years of age get killed by Herod. It was a part of his desperate attempt to terminate the child, Jesus. The newborn, the prophesied messiah would be a threat to his power and authority. His wrong understanding of the messiah and his clinging to power lead him to this merciless murderous act. The children become the helpless victims of his cruelty.

3.      Why Herod acts so? The first reading from 1 John gives us the answer. It is because the light of God is not in him. He walks in darkness. He does not live according to the truth. He is steeped into a false life. He has no fellowship with God or with others.

4.      On one hand, Herod stands before us as a negative example, and on the other hand, the innocent children as a positive example. Herod serves as a caution for us not to walk in the darkness of sin or falsity, or not to go against our fellowship with God and others, and not to do harm to others.

5.      The innocent children show us that life is meaningful and meritorious to live and even to die for the sake of Christ. Even though they did not die consciously and out of a free choice, yet what is important is that their life was offered on behalf of Christ. By their death in the place of Jesus, they in a way “saved” and “spared” the life of the Savior, the giver of life himself.

6.      This also indicates that any suffering in the name of Christ, for his sake and on his behalf, whether voluntary or forced, whether conscious or unconscious, is certainly meritorious and rewarding. God needs all of us and each one of us can help God in our own little way in fulfilling His holy designs.

Direction: In life, the reasons for all the problems and sufferings may not be always clear and reasonable. But it is always better to live through them in a spirit of forbearance and courage

(REFLECTION 2 FROM 2020)

Focus: Love gives life to others, while hatred destroys life. We are constantly making choices between life and death, between good and evil, between construction and destruction

The small children below two years become the victims of the fury of Herod, in his attempt to kill the child, Jesus. We get a better understanding of Herod in the light of the first reading from 1 John. He has no light of God in him, but darkness. He does not walk in the light. Therefore, he is not in fellowship with others, and has no human concern for others, and not even for the little children. And what irony and contrast: Jesus sheds his own blood, in order to purify us from our sins. But Herod sheds the blood of the innocent children, accumulating sin for himself. Now, one may argue why God allows such a tragedy? What is their fault? But this is not the main issue and it is not so necessary also. What is important to note is God's plans go ahead in spite of the human cruelty and obstacles. No human powers or evil forces can deter God's ways, even though they may create some temporary blocks, and may appear to dominate God and good. In the process of accomplishing a higher good and God’s holy will, some may need to pay the price and suffer. This is what is seen in the case of the holy innocents. They die in the place of child Jesus. They die on behalf of them. Apparently, these innocent children were the helpless victims, brutally murdered. But they were the "saviors" of the Saviour. In fact, they were not even aware of what was happening. This also shows another truth of God’s work. Everyone, even in innocence and silence can help the plan of God and can bear witness to the Lord. Though they are done away from the earth, from the mortal life. But they obtain heaven and eternal life. Yet again, there is a simple contrast between Herod and the small children: Herod, in full knowledge, kills the children, to kill Jesus; but the small children, even without any knowledge, die so as to save Jesus.

Direction: It is meritorious to suffer something for God, even in silence and innocence. To die for Jesus, even if it be forced, is certainly great

29 DECEMBER 2021: 1 JOHN 2. 3-11; LUKE 2. 22-35

Focus: Truth is not merely a matter of intellect and commandment is not merely a matter of legality. For us as the followers of Christ, knowing the truth and following commandments is a matter of faithful life

1.      For many, knowing is only an intellectual capacity and exercise. There is no guarantee that such knowledge affects and changes the life of a person. But for us, the disciples of Christ, knowing is believing and living, abiding in him and following. That is why St John in the first reading attests that the test for knowing God is to follow his commandments.

2.      Now what are these commandments? Loving God and loving the other. This is the only way to know and follow the truth. One who does not follow this double-pronged love is not in truth and is a liar. Further, this is the only way to know the light and walk in the light. Jesus is the light and one who does not know and believe and follow him is not in the light.

3.      If one is truly walking in the light, that is following Jesus, then it must be shown and testified by his love for his brother. Therefore, knowing, believing, abiding in the truth, and walking in the light are all essentially connected to loving God and loving the other.

4.      The beauty of the Word of God is that concepts like truth and light are understood in terms of experience, relationship and loyalty, and commitment. They are not conceptual or abstract. They are always in reference to Christ. That is why Simeon, a righteous and devout person who encounters the child Jesus in the temple at his purification ceremony, blesses and declares Christ to be the light of all.

5.      The purification and presentation of Jesus as per the Jewish custom is not merely a fulfilling of the custom, but much more a symbolic act. His presentation symbolizes his self-offering for humanity. His purification indicates the purification of the sin-infected humanity. This purification in terms of truth and light would mean to abide in truth and walk in the light. In other words, it means to be faithful to Christ and to love the other.

6.      Those who are with Christ and for Christ will certainly be pierced by a sword of sorrow like Mary. She became a sharer in the divine plan of salvation along with her Son. Therefore she becomes also a partaker of his own struggle against falsity and darkness.

Direction:  Christ is both the truth and the light. He calls for a truthful and authentic life. He also gives us the light to see the path and walk it. Such a life in concrete implies a life of devotion and righteousness like Simeon and a sword of suffering like Mary

(REFLECTION 2 FROM 2020)

Focus: Jesus is presented in the temple, symbolizing his own presentation, his self-offering for the salvation of humanity.

We have in today’s gospel passage the purification ceremony of child Jesus in the temple, as per the Law. He undergoes the purification ceremony, signifying our own purification from sin. As a first-born male, he is consecrated to God, again indicating his total consecration to God’s will for our sanctification. Now how to merit the fruits of this purification or presentation or consecration? See Simeon and follow his example. In the whole episode, Simeon remains a key figure. Both the first reading and the gospel depict his person: he is in the light because he loves his brothers and sisters, and awaits their salvation. He knows God and he is true because he fulfills God’s commands. The Holy Spirit was in him. He was upright and devout. That is why he is granted the unique grace of encountering the incarnate Savior. Indeed, what a grace and privilege it is: to see the light of the nations, to see the light of salvation, to hold the Savior himself in his hands. Simeon today teaches all of us that the only way to see the light of salvation is to constantly dispel the shades of our darkness. The more we know Jesus and follow him, the more we allow him to illumine us and to touch us, the more we love him and live uprightly and devoutly, the more we too will be blessed like Simeon.

Direction: In life, ultimately what counts is not the intelligence or competence or worldly resources, but only a life of truthfulness and faithfulness

30 DECEMBER 2021: 1 JOHN 2. 12-17; LUKE 2. 36-40

Focus: Many may wonder why the love for God is declining rapidly even though knowledge and capacities are increasing. The only reason is the love for the world is increasing at jet speed.

1.      Many do not realize that love for God and love for the world are not compatible. Love for the world does not mean simply living in the world. It is being tainted by the false values and deviating and destructive spirit of the world. It is being enslaved to the evil one. It is being driven by sexual and sensual desires and urges. It is being arrogant.

2.      Naturally these are contrary to the love for God and take us away from God. If so, then each person, according to his age and stage of life must fight against such pulls and pressures of the world. That is why John in the first reading addresses each category, like the children, the fathers, and the young. He has specific directives for each. The children ought to know the Father, especially his forgiveness. The fathers too ought to know the Father, especially in his eternity. The young people must be strong, abide in the word of God, and overcome evil.

3.      Whatever be the directives directed to each section, what is common and binding on all is to love God and resist the love for the world. Know God, Overcome the evil, and do always the will of God. Anna, the prophetess in the gospel, stands as a model for such perseverance and fidelity to God. After the death of her husband after 7 years of married life, till 84 she has totally dedicated her life to the service of the temple and worship of God. Nothing of the world could attract and deviate her. She was full of love for God and was obedient to him with prayer and fasting night and day.

4.      Child Jesus himself is presented as an example of how to live our life. He grew, became strong, filled with wisdom. The favor of God was upon him. This is how each one must live. We must grow constantly stronger and stronger, in wisdom and being pleasing to God.

Direction: Do you want to win God’s favor? Then, love him, do his will, do what pleases him, abide in his word and overcome evil. Rise above the pressures of the flesh and senses

(REFLECTION 2 FROM 2020)

Focus: A true Christian life is one, centered around God, and in difference to the world.

CHRIST came into the world, to revive the life that is infected by sin. But it will be effective only we are fully open and responsive. We need to guard ourselves against the evil forces and standards of the world. We need to grow in the knowledge and experience of God. We need to cultivate the right values. Our age and stage may be different, as John in the first reading addresses children, the young, and the fathers. The duties and the capacities of each section may be different. But our grace is the same, our salvation is the same, and our faith demands are also the same. All without exception are called not to love the world and to be trapped by its snares. This implies that we should guard against the craving of the flesh, the greed of the senses, and the arrogance to dominate and to feel superior. Instead, we need to love the Father, consistently strive to do His will, allow the word of God live in us, and overcome evil. Further, like Anna, in the gospel, we need to focus our attention always on God and center our daily life around the temple. Serving God in personal presence, in prayer, in spiritual activities, and transmitting God's love and mercy to others is the fitting way to continue the spirit of Christmas.

Direction: We belong to God and so we shall not long for what belongs to the world. The more we fall in love with the world, the more we will be fallen

31 DECEMBER 2021, 1 JOHN 2. 18-21; JOHN 1. 1-18

Focus: The graced life of Christmas is a constant invitation to live in a state of grace which is in contrast to a life of vice and evil. It is a call to be pro-Christ and for Christ and not the antichrist

1.      One more year is finishing and slipping into the past calendar. At the end of the year 2021, many may be in the mood of recollection of the past and planning for the future. Yes, it is a double-edged mood: recollection leading to reconstruction, review leading to renewal. We shall recollect past memories and situations. It is not to regret or lament over the past lapses and mistakes or failures. It is to learn from the past defects and deficiencies to grow into a better future.

2.      It has been another hard year under the spell of the pandemic. We have not yet recovered from our bitter and painful, failed and deprived, frightening and worrisome experiences. The reasons to be sad and upset seem to be more than those to rejoice and be calm. The spirit of joy and peace that Christmas promises does not seem to make sense in the lives of many.

3.      But, the ending of 2021 and the beginning of the new year 2022 shall reignite our dulled spirits. Nothing, however sad or bad, painful or lamentable, unpleasant or unfavorable, shall strike down our energy and zest for life. Why? The sole reason is God. The birth of Christ is not a past, bygone event. Christ who was born on Christmas day continues to live in the new year. He walks into our journey of the new year. The Word who became flesh dwells among us, full of grace and truth.

4.      We are reminded again that He gives us the power to become the children of God through the gift of faith. He is the Word of God, the communication of God with us, the medium through which God reveals himself to us. He is the life that becomes the light of all. He is the Light that enlightens everyone. This light shines in the darkness and the darkness cannot overcome it. He is the light that enlightens everyone. From his fullness have we all received, grace upon grace. We all know the truth. We have been anointed by the Holy One.

5.      Therefore, we have better and more valid reasons to rejoice than to grumble and blame. The blessings and the spiritual success we experience count more than all the troubles and losses put together. Nothing shall keep low our soaring spirits. Let our review of the past help us to renew our present to build a better future.

Direction: At the closure of the outgoing year 2021, let our prime focus be on guarding ourselves and witnessing to the Lord against antichrists. Accepting the truth and light and walking in their path shall be our fitting turning point in the year to come

(REFLECTION 2 FROM 2020)

Focus: God came down to us so that we can go up to him. Therefore, we can go up only when we raise ourselves up from being too much earth-bound

As we are on the last day of the year, quite fittingly we have the Prologue of St John which summarizes the whole plan and action of salvation, the interplay between God and the humans, and the response, and the part that is to be played by us. As we wind up the year, we shall sum up gratefully all the mercies of God, especially the greatest mercy of his incarnation. We remind ourselves of the divinity of Jesus and his intimacy with the Father. We thank God for loving us so much and becoming one of us, as the light that dispels our darkness. We are expected to recognize and accept this Light and bear witness to the Light as John the Baptist. But unfortunately, we fail to receive the Light and thus fail to light up our lives. This is the biggest danger, as John in his first epistle cautions us. This is the danger of falling away from Christ. It is to break the bond of belonging to God and to one another. It is to become an antichrist. The end of this outgoing year should well up within us primarily two greatest feelings. One is immense gratitude for all the numberless blessings. True it is that the situations that surround us seem very dark, worrisome, and discouraging. A large gloom is painted over our faces because of the frightening pandemic. But that is no reason to lose sight of the enormous mercy of God and the positive in life. The second sentiment should be that of repentance. Let us repent for the lost chances of grace, of virtue, of charity. Thus, we can be better prepared to step into the new year.

Direction: Let us not forfeit the greatest grace of becoming God's children by our negligence and mediocrity.

01 JANUARY 2022: NUMBERS 6. 22-27; GALATIANS 4. 4-7; LUKE 2. 16-21, NEW YEAR, MARY, THE MOTHER OF GOD

Focus: The New Year that we step in opens up for us new avenues with new hope and assurance, with renewed confidence and courage, for God is with us

1.      We are stepping into another new year 2022. At these first moments of the new year, let us first warm ourselves with a warm sentiment of gratitude for the whole of the last year. No doubt that it had its own woes and struggles. But it shall not blind us to the positive and the blessings.

2.      There are very many things to thank God and others for. The experiences of God’s protection, care, love, guidance, nourishment, and power that gave us the taste of success, and satisfaction, joy, and strength have been constant and deep. The experiences of the goodness of others through concern and support are too numerous. We have many reasons to be grateful. The very fact that we are able to celebrate this New Year is a clear sign of God’s blessing.

3.      Of course, we want to be realistic. The New Year is not a magical rod that will vanquish all the fears and problems. It will be foolish to think so. Most of the same old challenges and burdens will travel into the New Year as well. But, what makes the difference is when we carry God also into the New Year along with all these.

4.      At the threshold of this New Year, we are assured of God’s company and blessing. We hear in the first reading from the book of Numbers, “The Lord bless you and keep you; the Lord make his face to shine upon you and be gracious to you; the Lord lift up his countenance upon you and give you peace”.

5.      This blessing by God is symbolized by celebrating the naming of Jesus and the Motherhood of Mary. Thereby we are assured that the New Year will be blessed because we are sealed and shielded by the powerful name of Jesus. We shall march forward and surge ahead because we walk in his holy name and under his sacred tutelage. The name and the power of Jesus shall be our identity, our guide, and direction, our weapon, and our security.

6.      Further, we are entrusted to the motherhood of Mary. All our New Year shall be specially mothered by her. She will take care of us with a mother’s tenderness. She will direct us closer to her divine Son. She will obtain forgiveness for our faults and wrongs. She will obtain for us the needed graces to live authentically and fruitfully.

Direction: All that is needed to experience the newness of life in the New Year 2022 is to be constantly aware of the dignity of our vocation as the sons and daughters of God, to find him in the manger of our hearts and surrender our lives to the holy name of Jesus and the sweet mothering of Mary

(REFLECTION 2 FROM 2021)

Focus: We begin the new year, filled with gratitude and geared by hope and vigor. Newness is not the absence and total vanishing of all the old problems but is a new way of looking at them, and approaching them

Another year, 2021. A new year, full of aspirations and visions. Lots of plans and programs on the slate. Certainly, we hope for the better and we must. The reason for our hope and confidence in God. As we venerate Mary as the Mother of God and celebrate her divine maternity, as we celebrate the naming of Jesus, we entrust ourselves to them. We are assured of the maternal affection and guidance of Mary, and the security and the power of Jesus. With the Mother holding the responsibility for us and entrusting us to the safest and most powerful name of Jesus, we can always hope against hope. We can always do better than before. Perhaps the reality may not change much. Perhaps the same fears and problems will persist. But what can change and make difference is our attitude, our approach, and handling? Newness is all about a new heart, renewed attitude and values, and approach. What is old in the biblical sense must change. That old man, that old nature, that old garb, that old leaven must cease (cf. Eph 4. 19f). Our old spirit of ingratitude, of pride, of jealousy, of selfishness, of the loose tongue, of impatience, of insincerity, of crookedness, of revenge and grudge, of aggression and hurt, of greed, the indifference of unconcern – only to mention a few – these must change. Therefore, naming the Lord, Motherhood of Mary, which we celebrate in these first moments of the new year, clearly gives us the greatest courage and hope. In the name of the Lord, accompanied by his powerful name and power, cared for and guided by the Mother’s love, we are safe, secure, and serene.

Direction: Nothing can take away our hope as long as we are with God. The new year is the greatest assurance that God will never fail us
